Hi!

With Action Comics 1000 and his 80th year anniversary, my feelings about his classic costume resurfaced since Brian Michael Bendis and DC Comics returned the character to that goofy red trunks look to celebrate his milestone. So i asked a deviant named umbatman to redesign a tasteful and cool Superman costume that reflects the times yet keeps the core essence of the character intact and he came up with not just one but five cool looking designs and that was impressive, considering he's not a big fan of Superman.

Let's just hope that DC will change their mind and POV and move the character and his mythology forward with the times. That goofy classic costume design only reinforces the notion to Marvel fans and non comicbook people that DC is the home of "Your grandparent's superheroes" and why some people find Marvel characters more cooler i think. They have this thinking that superheroes wearing trunks over pants is goofy and dated and not cool and yeah i can totally agree. From a design standpoint, it's impractical and a fashion eyesore. So i hope that to my deviant followers who are fans of the character that you don't take this redesign attempt as an affront but rather as a way to evolve the character with love and care.

Any worthwhile concept and IP has to move with the times to remain relevant and not be forgotten. Adapt or perish. That's a fact of life. If Superman's contemporaries like Captain America and Wonder Woman have gained renewed popularity and acceptance thru various media like movies, cartoons and games and have moved with the times, then why can't the very first superhero yes? I think it's a disservice to the character if this attitude of ICONIC REVERENCE hampers in the way of much needed character development and evolution to the character just because he has worn that classic costume for so long, that the DC creatives don't want to progress the character for fear of backlash from fanboy purists. Because in their minds they think that it's "sacrilegious" to tamper with his design, never mind that it's goofy and dated. And fanboys come up with the stupid excuse of "Real men wear trunks". Oh really? Why don't you try doing what you've just said and tell me if it doesn't feel silly and embarrassing" It's this narrow and closed off mindset that irks me and will be the death of characters like Superman.

Anyways, please do check out umbatman's DA page and spread the Superman design post to your fellow deviants and friends. He will greatly appreciate all that support and hopefully this will get DC's attention. If not, at least we've tried and that's all anyone can do.

Megatron (Ultima)
This is Megatron's final form after Vanquish Prime (The Fallen) was defeated. You could look at this as him being freed from the Galvatron reformatting that he got and reverting back to his old form, only more meaner and tougher. I decided to go with rendering him green because of his vehicle mode and i was inspired by the 80's Marvel comics Transformers and a Megatron toy with that same color scheme. Vehicle mode is the M1A2 Abrams battle tank.

Optimus Prime (Primera)
This is Optimus Prime's reawakened form after his battle with Megatron. I chose this specific International truck because i wanted to go with a trailer truck that is not a flat front and i liked the front grill of this particular truck and am a big fan of M.A.S.K.'s Rhino truck so there you go.

Windcharger
My take on this rather interesting character. He's still reckless and impulsive as he was in Generation One. I just changed his head design a bit and gave him a shoulder cannon and a handgun that generates wind blasts to fit with his name and personality. Vehicle mode is the LEXUS LC 500.

Rodimus Prime (Convoy)
“Arise Rodimus Prime”

I want to fulfill the potential and promise of those very words that Optimus Prime said to Hot Rod when he was able to unlock the Autobot Matrix Of Leadership and so here we are.

This is my version of Rodimus Prime and how i think he should look as a PRIME.

Now i know that most of you still see him as Hot Rod and in Rodimus Prime mode, as a hot rod Pontiac Firebird with a camper wagon trailer mash up but i'd like to think that he could be made to look cool and badass, the way Takara and Hasbro intended the character to be. His exhaust pipes can shoot energy blasts even in vehicle mode and i gave him a better handgun. He looks slightly bigger and heavier but you can still see that he's Hot Rod even if he's now a PRIME.

His vehicle mode is the Navistar International Prostar trailer truck. Enjoy!

Here's a look at Hot Rod: frederickofolympus.deviantart.… and here's Galvatron, his rival: frederickofolympus.deviantart.…

it was my pleasure and made me look at superman differently and also a
challenge as i know in the concept industry I won't get projects that I like and might have to do
things I am unfamiliar with so superman was a an awesome chance to find new work flows, do research and do many many designs
and really think about the character.

I see now that I am just a noob, I see he is more to you then just christopher reeves, dean cane, brendon routh, george reeves and henry cavil.
I was also making mistakes trying to make him to tech and cybernetic like cyborg or iron man.

AFter reading all you input/ rants It made me realize he doesn't need scanners, Jarvis, grapple gun, arrows, jet packs, hidden explosive.
He is the man of steal and he has more powers then most, SO i kept the design alien and core to the fundamentals, i didn't want to damage the character.

Don't sell yourself short. We designers will in one way or another encounter a project that's not within our wheelhouse and outside of our comfort zone. And that should excite us as it truly gives us an opportunity to know our limits as a designer/artist and if we could rise above them. I'd look at it that way and judging from your statements so did you and you should be proud of what you've done with the Superman costume redesigns. As i've said before, they are tastefully done and well executed in my opinion.:)

Every character has their own charm and qualities to be honest. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, Captain America and Iron Man. The great ones have more depth and sides to them than just their popular depictions and iterations. That's why i think Superman is greatly misunderstood, because he's a deceptively complex character. The popular misconception is that just because he's the ultimate do gooder, the assumption that most people make is that he's very naive in his desire to do good when there's a deep reason for him to do that and that is when he hears all the people that cry out for help nonstop 24/7 and when he couldn't save all of those people, then that tears him up all the more inside. Because he really is that good deep down and wants to help ALL people, no matter the race, nationality or gender. Batman is like that in a much darker and twisted way but more so because of what happened to him and that he doesn't want that to happen to other people as well. Superman is all those things that me and so many people have constantly mentioned and more. So much more. And that's why he has lasted for 80 years and why he has 1000 issues of ACTION COMICS to his credit. Superman is much more than the charisma and appeal of the various actors that have portrayed the character.

Well, his main weaknesses are Kryptonite and magic yes? An idea just hit me. And it pertains to his weakness to magic. Hear me out. What if when he's hit by a magical blast, like say Shazam or Black Adam's magical lightning bolt, his entire body shorts out like a machine being hit by an EMP blast and renders his powers inert for let say five to ten minutes. That will make for an interesting outcome in terms of hand to hand brawlfest with other super powered adversaries, since he doesn't have full command of his strength, powers and super senses and increases the jeopardy and raises the possibility that Superman might lose or die, since that's the complaint most fans and writers have with regard to the character. How do you write a character that has so many powers that he will end up winning most of the time? With this unique quirk, this solves that particular problem and makes the fight all the more interesting and unpredictable. I wish the writers and creative teams of DC Comics would incorporate this in their Superman stories. So what do you think?

Yes, you're right. He doesn't need any of those gadgets and all that fancy schmanzy stuff because he is SUPERMAN after all, the MAN OF STEEL. And am glad that you took my inputs and suggestions and keep to the core essence and parameters of the character while coming up with those cool designs.

I did post my latest DA journal regarding this and my overall thoughts about DC's "ICONIC REVERENCE" syndrome:  Superman Redesign and so called ICONIC REVERENCEHi!
